"Solid Waste Management System for the City of Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan (1996)"

This was an 8-month project implemented solely by ESI. The project was financed partially by the City Government with collateral financing by Harvard Institute for International Development within its contract with USAID. The Project included the following elements:

  1. Reviewing Local Solid Waste Legislative and Regulatory Documents and Developing Recommendations for Improvement;

  2. Performing Detailed Analysis of the Existing Solid Waste Management System:

  1. waste generation rate and waste composition;

  2. waste collection and transporting system;

  3. waste disposal system including site visits and inspection of the existing and inactive the City landfills;

  4. waste recycling programs.

  1. Performing a Comparative Analysis of the Solid Waste Management System in Almaty City and selected the US and European Cities;

  2. Analyzing and Identifying Needs in Collection, Transporting and Landfill Heavy Equipment;

  3. Developing Recommendations on Formulating and Development Requirements on Landfill Design, Operational Practice, and Environmental Protection Measures;

  4. Conducting Seminars, Workshops, and Public Meetings for Local Professionals, Regulatory Agencies Personnel, and General Public.
